Protect Your Home’s Pipes This Winter

frozen pipe

Winter is in full swing, and with it comes the snow, ice and cold temperatures. Frozen and broken pipes in your home are a common problem during the winter months, but there are ways to prevent it from happening to you.

Water expands when it freezes, and when this happens in your home’s pipes, they can crack or burst, causing you to be without water and WITH an expensive repair bill.

According to the American Red Cross, there are a few measures you can take to prevent your pipes from freezing:

Drain the water from your sprinkler system and swimming pools.
Drain the hoses you keep outside and bring them in for the season. Close the inside valves that supply water to the hose bibs, and open the outside valve so the water can drain. Let this outside valve remain open all winter. Any remaining water in the pipes can expand without breaking them.
Inspect your home for water supply lines located in unheated areas, such as your attic, garage or basement. Insulate those lines with products made to insulate pipes, such as pipe sleeves, heat tape or heat cable. Newspaper can even provide protection for pipes.
Keep your garage doors closed.
When the outside temperature is really cold, let your inside faucets drip cold water and open the cupboard doors to let the warm air circulate around the pipes.
Keep your thermostat at a consistent temperature, even at night. If you leave town, don’t lower the temperature below 55°F.

It’s not too late to protect your pipes from the freezing temperatures. If you haven’t already, take a few moments to prepare your home for the rest of the winter, and avoid the costly, inconvenient hassle of frozen pipes!

Own a Boat? We’ve Got You Covered

Watercraft insurance coverages go beyond the scope of a standard homeowners policy to include Roadside Assistance, which covers towing of your boat or personal watercraft for free, as long as your trailer is covered; On-Water Towing, in case you’re stranded on the water; and Uninsured Boaters coverage.

You can also choose Fuel Spill Liability and Wreckage Removal coverage with watercraft insurance.

Without these watercraft insurance coverages, you may end up getting stuck with the bill for cleanups and removals. Personal Effects and Fishing Equipment coverages are also available.

Think about replacement costs.
Boats and personal watercraft depreciate just like cars do. A homeowners policy will only pay you actual cash value for your boat or personal watercraft, which could make it difficult to replace if it’s destroyed.

But with watercraft insurance you have Total Loss Replacement options and more. Some insurance companies will replace your boat or personal watercraft with a brand new model if the loss is within the first five model years. There is also Agreed Value coverage no matter how old your boat is.
